The English illustrator Anna Atkins (1799-1871) was in every respect a modern woman. For the publication of her plant collections she used the latest technology, the recently invented cyanotype. In 1843 she used the process to create the first photo book in history, with images of breathtaking beauty and originality which often look like modern art.
At first Anna Atkins worked for and with her father, the zoologist John George Children; later she chose the objects for her scientific compositions herself: algae and ferns. Atkins placed them on light-sensitive paper that turned dark blue in water after being developed, with the exception of the places that had been covered by the plants. Initially alone, and then with her friend Anne Dixon, she produced well over 10,000 copies of her photograms and assembled them in several books like albums. Today these rare copies are regarded as treasures and are preserved in museums and libraries. -

Lotte Laserstein : a divided life

- 9783777441863
A detailed and richly illustrated study of a rediscovered realist painter.
Recent years have seen a renewed interest in the painter Lotte Laserstein (1898-1993), whose striking landscapes, portraits, self-portraits, and sensual nudes demonstrate her synthesis of traditional painting style and modern subject matter. Born in Germany and exiled to Sweden during the Nazi regime, Laserstein created a diverse and extensive body of work over five decades.
Incorporating essays on Laserstein's work in Berlin before her exile and her reception in Sweden, images of her art, and unpublished archival material, this book furthers our understanding of the artist's life and creative output. Iris Müller-Westerman and Anna-Carola Krausse include art from the whole of Laserstein's career, including previously unpublished work. Other contributions build on debates about gender and queerness in the artist's work and analyze her assimilation strategies in Sweden. The catalog accompanies a 2023 retrospective at the Moderna Museet in Stockholm.
Shedding new light on Laserstein's life and art, this book cements her reputation as one of the twentieth century's great realists. -

Two Bauhaus masters and their impressive contributions to the art of textile design.
Gunta Stölzl (1897-1983) and the prominent Swiss artist Johannes Itten (1888-1967) were Bauhaus teachers who met in the experimental field during their time at the Bauhaus in Weimar. This volume takes a look at the artistic pairing and assembles in picturesque detail their impressive contributions to Swiss textile art.
Few people are aware that Itten made an in-depth study of textile design. Accordingly, this book invites readers to rediscover him as a textile designer in conjunction with Stölzl, who has a place in art history as a "classic of textile art." Both artists left Nazi Germany in the 1930s and explored innovations in ornamental and textile forms. Their work revived textile art in Switzerland with new ways of inventing forms and ornamentation and helped establish a network of modern Swiss textile art. -

Sculptures by two impressive artists, both inspired by Rodin, emerge from the shadow cast by their great role model: the works of Camille Claudel (1864-1943) and Bernhard Hoetger (1874-1949) paved the way for sculpture to enter the modern age. The artistic freedom of the avant-garde including the emerging Art Nouveau can be seen in new forms and ideals.

Around 1500, Lucas Cranach the Elder steps onto the world stage - in Vienna. The publication explores this, the artist's earliest period of work and presents all the paintings he produced during this time, their expressiveness radically different from the courtly-elegant compositions he subsequently produced as court painter in Wittenberg.
Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472-1553) produced his earliest works around 1500 in Vienna, shortly before moving to Wittenberg to become court painter to the Elector of Saxony. These brilliant paintings, drawings, and woodcuts document both the thirty-year-old's close contacts with the humanist circles of Konrad Celtis and Johannes Cuspinian, and identify him as a precursor of the so-called Danube School.

The artist Kubra Khademi (b. 1989) lives in Paris and focuses in her work on her life as a woman and a person with direct experience as a refugee. This makes it both political and highly topical. Multi-faceted themes pervade her art, including her function as mouthpiece and as an element in the fight for the fundamental rights of women, as well as artistic work in exile and in a Muslim society.
In paintings and more recently with the use of photographic techniques and embroidery, Khademi presents tranquil nude female figures that - depending on the angle - can nonetheless be interpreted as provocative. They are juxtaposed with impressive performances that draw on the artist's own physical experiences as a subject. Khademi focuses her attention on the male-dominated society in countries like her native Afghanistan and the socio-political situation there, linking together motifs from mythology, art history and politics. Kubra Khademi has received many awards for her work, and this overview publication presents her oeuvre in all its complexity. -

An exploration of Paula Rego's complex heroines and modern fairy-tale pictures.
The female protagonists of the Portuguese-British artist Paula Rego either come from real life or derive from the world's great legends, fairy tales, and myths. As complicated heroines of our time, they have endured illegal abortions or fought against the limitations of traditional gender roles instead of dragons.
«My favorite themes are power games and hierarchies.» Rego's oeuvre is a tour de force of creativity. Endlessly versatile and inexhaustible, it is deeply rooted in pictorial worlds and stories from both past and present. This volume approaches the remarkable wealth of Rego's multi-faceted universe through a range of different perspectives and tells of the power of history and emotions, women's rights, and invisible structures of domination. -

The publication is a tribute to a cosmopolitan artist, to whom painting represented the love of the world. -

A richly illustrated survey of the work of one of the best-known German artists of the twentieth century.
Käthe Kollwitz (1867-1945) was one of the best-known German artists of the twentieth century. The unmistakable, touching language of her graphic and sculptural works is quickly grasped across cultures, enabling her work to be celebrated around the world.
Kollwitz debuted her graphic cycle «Ein Weberaufstand,» for which she drew inspiration from Gerhart Hauptmann's drama of the same name, at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition in 1898. It was a great success, even as it caused a stir among the authorities because of its socially critical message. Outraged by the social ills of her time, Kollwitz dedicated her life to depicting people and giving a voice to the misery and grief of the poor and underprivileged in her works. Equally ingenious in terms of expression and artistic implementation, she took up themes such as farewell and death, peace, and the suffering of war in her graphics and sculptures. But she also offered intimate depictions of a mother and child, as well as self-portraits full of strength and beauty. This volume provides a brief but comprehensive overview of the artist's life and oeuvre. -

Compact, lavishly illustrated overview of artist Max Beckman's life and work.
Max Beckmann (1884-1950), the outstanding Expressionist painter, is regarded as one of the most important artists of the twentieth century. Beckmann's work reflected the social upheavals of his time, not only in his art but also through his extensive correspondence and diaries. He was an observer, a gentleman, a loner, and a reflective witness of his age. It is especially in his expressive self-portraits that we believe we can get closer to Beckmann's multi-faceted nature. Max Beckmann traces his artistic career and the principal stations of his life, from his years in Berlin and Frankfurt to his exile in Amsterdam and America. His works will be shown, including private photos and objects from amongst the artist's personal possessions. They are critical of the times in which he lived and bear witness to Beckmann's struggle with existential questions and his constant search for truth.
